Do you actually need a new Wi-Fi router?
Slow Wi-Fi is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A new router can solve the problem when the router is truly the bottleneck, but it cannot fix a weak internet plan, a failing modem, poor placement, thick walls, interference, or one misbehaving device.

What matters most
If Wi-Fi is bad even beside the router, the problem may be upstream or the router itself.
Fast nearby + slow far away points toward coverage and placement.
Open, central, elevated placement usually beats a cabinet, floor, corner, or basement.
Security support, stability, capacity, and standards matter more than the router's age alone.

Start with the simplest useful test
Run a speed test from a device close to the router and then repeat from the problem area. The goal is not to chase an exact number. It is to compare conditions.
If the near-router test is dramatically better, your internet connection may be fine and the weakness is inside the house. If both tests are poor, connect a computer by Ethernet if possible. A good wired result with poor Wi-Fi points toward the wireless network. A poor wired result points farther upstream.
Placement can matter more than hardware
Wi-Fi radio energy has to travel through your house. Dense walls, metal, masonry, appliances, floors, and distance all reduce signal quality. A router hidden in a cabinet at one end of the house starts at a disadvantage.
A central, elevated, open location usually gives the signal fewer obstacles. Moving the router several feet can sometimes improve coverage more than buying a slightly newer model.
What mesh actually does
A mesh system uses multiple access points to extend usable coverage. It is especially helpful in larger homes, multistory homes, or layouts where one central router cannot reach everywhere reliably.
But mesh is not magic. A wireless mesh node placed in a dead zone may itself have a weak connection back to the main network. The node should usually sit where it still receives a good upstream signal while extending coverage toward the weak area.
When replacement becomes reasonable
Replacement starts to make sense when the router no longer receives security updates, cannot support WPA2 or WPA3, crashes or reboots, lacks the capacity for your device load, or cannot deliver the performance your internet plan and home actually need.
Do not replace a router simply because a newer Wi-Fi generation exists. A stable router that covers your home and gets security updates may still be entirely adequate.

Restart the modem and router, test close to the router, test in the weak room, then test another device. If possible, run one wired Ethernet test. Those four comparisons tell you far more than simply looking at the number of Wi-Fi bars.
