    An earlier version of this story said the Ottoman Empire boycotted trade with China and closed the Silk Road routes in 1453. Historians don’t support that claim. Overland trade declined gradually over the 15th and 16th centuries as sea routes grew more important. We updated the Quick Answer, Key Facts, timeline and sources.

  • September 27, 2026 · Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky?

    An earlier version of this story said Thomas W. Lawson’s 1907 novel reportedly sold about 28,000 copies in its first week. We couldn’t confirm that figure in an authoritative source, so we removed it.

    An earlier version of this story said only one complete Viking-age helmet has ever been found. Two nearly complete ones are known: the Gjermundbu helmet from Norway and the Yarm helmet from England, confirmed as Viking-age in 2020. Neither has horns, so the answer doesn’t change.
