It depends on the product and settings. In ChatGPT, memory can use information from prior chats to personalize future responses, and users can review or turn it off.

Memory is product-specific

Different AI products implement persistence differently. Some remember only inside a thread, some retain saved preferences, and some can synthesize context across past activity. The right question is not “does AI remember?” but “what does this product retain, for how long, and under which controls?”

Chat history and memory are not identical

OpenAI explains that saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting a conversation does not necessarily delete information that was separately saved as memory. Users can manage memory independently.

Use the controls intentionally

For material you do not want carried forward, review the product’s personalization and data controls. Temporary Chat is designed for conversations that should not create new memory, though safety-related retention rules can still apply.
